Even though I have completed the final weeks discover and explore activities, I will definitely have to revise a number of the weeks activities to reinforce it all in the grey matter.

The course has definitely opened up a whole new world to me and will definitely make a positive difference to my work and to the services I provide for our members.

Thank you for the time and effort it has taken in producing and servicing the course.

Week 12 - Social Networking

Finally - a nice easy week, which I could actually follow with no problems. - Of course is had to be the last didn't it!!

Not sure I'm really into Social Networking, or really see the benefits of it for our library, but it is definitely something that is the rage at the moment, and at least I now know the lingo.

Catching up

Having made a good start to the program, I have found the last few weeks (month???) have been extremely difficult in getting a fresh start at it.

However, I have managed to complete Week 11 - Online tools and applications. I have emailed a presentation to the Learning Web 2.0 crew and also spent some time on Zoho. After a short explore, I think Zoho is closer to other software than Google Docs. I also found emailing from Google docs was a bit difficult.

There are definate advantages in a library for both these programs.

Will know attack Week 12 while on a roll.

Mashups

While the concept seemed simple, it took a bit of meandering to figure out how to actually do a mashup, but looks like I've managed to accomplish it.

Leaving and working in a rural environment, there is definite value in having lectures and study forums in the form of podcasts.

Pod Casting

There just seems to be no end to the cyber world and the next stage of the journey.

Not sure we have a need for podcasting in a small rural library, but you just never know.

Answer Boards for Librarians

A refreshingly easier week this week!! After last week, I can certainly use a simple task.

Answerboards will be a very useful tool, especially in large libraries, we are relatively small, so probably wouldn't be utilised.

Don't think the embedding of the video quite worked. There didn't seem to be much instruction on how to do this from the weekly lesson. Will have to see what I can come up with.

I think the biggest advantage to using RSS over favourites, or bookmarks, is the information comes to you, rather than constantly checking to see if there have been any additions made to the sites - this information is automated, hopefully saving time and effort. As is becoming more the case, being ruthless with what sites you add will ensure that only information you desperately want to stay up to date with is sent through. I sometimes think we swamp ourselves with over information and instead of this being another way to receive more, let it be a way of screening.

The sites in this test example are ones which are on my favourites and that I often access. However, I will probably reevaluate this and cull if neccessary.

This technology will be useful in a work context, again by screening if any sites have been updated, instead of wasting time unnessarily screening sites which may not have changed.

Libraries will definitely be able to use this new information by adding links to the Library blogs to sites which its members would be interested in accessing.

Here we are into week 4 and just when I think I have a handle on what's happening they throw this RSS at us!!

Seem to have managed to set up an account at Bloglines and I think I have subscribed to 5 sites.

One query, if anyone out there can help: Some of the sites I regularly check, don't seem to have a RSS button (or the one at the top isn't highlighted at anyrate). Is there anyway to subscribe to these, or do they need to do something from their end first??

Well, that's my first attempt at attaching a link from Flickr - ummm, not too painful, I don't think. Although I haven't gone in to check if it did actually work , from the outside looking in!

There has also been a bit of background deleting and editing of the mistakes before it was actually publish post - ed!! Although you probably didn't need to know this!

The Daring Escapade

The ZIB's have made a daring escape from the safe world on abc kids and has now entered the world of Learning 2.0.

Having successfully created a Gmail account and a blog site. The quickly wilting ZIB's will sign off from their first posting to recuperate with a nice refreshing V8 juice!
